BUILDING INCLUSION

The Book & The Work

“Inclusion isn’t about other people and their identities, it’s about us and our behaviours.”

Marsha Ramroop

The Book

Building Inclusion: A Practical Guide to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Architecture and the Built Environment is just that – a manual to support with how to do EDI in the sector.  It focuses on demonstrating the behaviours - culturally Intelligent ones - in order to create, implement and enforce, the policies, procedures and practices to deliver inclusion, across how we attract people into our professions, how we treat progress and retain them, how we create our design and deliver products and services, and how we engage our external stakeholders – including our communities, customers and clients.

It has case studies from organisations doing that well from across the sector, and world, and reminds you why the behavioural piece is important with testimonials of lived experiences of discrimination from colleagues in the professions.

The Work

The Book can serve as a tool, not just insight, for you to go ahead and start to action the work of strategic inclusion.

Dr Yasmeen Lari, the RIBA Gold Medal recipient in 2023 says in her foreword: “This work, and the advice within it, is hugely important, and the tools presented here are invaluable for those in the Built Environment.”

From publication date in August, this website will be a support hub with updated resources and links to help with delivering on the behaviours, policies, procedures and practices, to create and maintain inclusion as described in the Book.

Marsha Ramroop, The Author

Marsha Ramroop runs her own strategic inclusion consultancy Unheard Voice, working across sectors, but with a passion for driving change in the built environment and engineering sectors.

She sees these two areas as pillars of how we create our societies, and that if she can influence those sectors to be inclusive, she can more strategically influence the creation of a more inclusive world.

Her best-practice solutions are rooted in CQ – cultural intelligence – the behavioural capability to work and relate effectively across difference.

Marsha tackles the gap between intention and action with behavioural solutions to ensure successful creation, implementation and enforcement of policies, procedures and practices to mitigate the impact of bias.
